RCOs could be getting SLAPP protections

Holme Circle Civic Association met last week, with members happy to hear of the recent unanimous state House passage of House Bill 1466, which would give registered community organizations a process to dismiss so-called Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP).

If a suit is dismissed, an RCO could recover attorneys’ fees, costs and damages.

Holme Circle Civic also agreed to join the 32-member Crosstown Coalition’s effort to add an amendment to the bill that would provide RCOs with reimbursement if their insurance premiums increase due to a SLAPP suit.

Meanwhile, City Council is weighing a proposed change to the Home Rule Charter that would provide legal protections to RCOs that are sued.

In other news from the Oct. 25 meeting:

• There are Toys for Tots collection boxes at the offices of state Rep. Ed Neilson (16 Old Ashton Road) and City Councilman Mike Driscoll (7552 Frankford Ave.).

• Torresdale Library, 3079 Holme Ave., has new hours: Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday hours are expected to be announced soon.
